Later, Maria was sitting naked in her room with Danny, who held her hand tightly.
"Danny," she said. "Why haven't you kissed me?"
Danny responded by leaning his head on her shoulder.
"If you're waiting for my permission, you won't get it," Maria said softly. "Don't you know by now, the fact that I exist here with you is permission enough?"
"I need to know first that I'm good," Danny replied. "Lest I poison you with my ambition..."
"Why so poetic all of a sudden?" Maria giggled.
"I'll kiss you someday again..." Danny said, looking off to the side. "But first I need to know that I'm right. That I can't make a mistake..."
"I honor that," Maria said. "In that case, I'll make the same vow with you. Let's find our truth together."
